Oil palm plantations are commonly associated with devastating deforestation throughout Indonesia, but vast tracks of oil palm have now covered Latin American countries like Costa Rica and Peru. This 3-D flyover was created by the Carnegie Airborne Observatory in close collaboration with the Peruvian Ministry of Environment. -

This ultra-high resolution fly through the Amazon rainforest canopy was acquired with CAO AToMS in July 2011. Different shades of red show variations in chemicals found in the leaves of trees in 3D. -

The Carnegie Airborne Observatory, in conjunction with the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, imaged the ecological impacts of gold mining in Madre de Dios region of Peru. This CAO image shows forest canopy in green, and different levels of forest degradation and loss in brown. -

The CAO AToMS system imaged this Panamanian forest canopy in super high resolution in 2012. The 3-D imagery shows the trees and vines (lianas) that inhabit the rainforest canopy.
